Charity running: Where the dollar sign meets the finish line
Charity running has become an integral part of the Chicago Half Marathon, and we want to continue to your programs and the causes they support. Training for a half marathon is a challenge, and finding the right motivation is a great way to keep it fun and help athletes stay committed. Cause related endurance events have experienced tremendous growth.  Charity training programs provide participants with support, professional coaching and inspiration. We want to help you find athletes that are looking to make that connection, by promoting your training programs.  We encourage all of our interested participants to get into the spirit of charity racing and connect with a worthy cause that will inspire them to train for and complete a half marathon.

For Charity opportunities, please contact Linsey Bailys:

Fundraising Made Easy
There are a number of creative and functional ways you can make the fundraising effort tremendously successful for your charity. The most common and effective way is by setting up a fundraising pledge program where runners collect pledges and donations based on the completion of their race. As the charity, you would obtain the race entry on behalf of the individual (at a certain value), and the individual in turn raises a minimum of “X dollars” for your charity to be able to earn that entry to the half marathon.  As an example, charities tend to ask for pledges ranging from a minimum of $200 up to $3,000. Depending on the minimum pledge, charities create packages that include travel arrangements (hotels, airfare, etc.), shirts, pre and post race meals, and training/coaching programs. Each charity has the option to develop a program according to your goals, resources and expected participants. We can help provide you with ideas and opportunities, but the implementation and collection of the fundraising program is up to the charity and its participants.

How do runners find out that a charity is affiliated with the Chicago Half Marathon?
Recruiting participants to fundraise is generally done through your communication channels and database of contacts. However, we will promote your charity through our website and direct interested runners to research our partner charities or those who support causes which they may have a specific interest in.

13 minute Pace Requirement!
The Chicago Half Marathon is the only race in Chicago that gets to close down Lake Shore Drive completely between 67th Street and 31st Street.  It is one of the coolest things to be able to run on one of the Nation’s most famous and scenic roads.  By having the road completely closed it makes for a very safe race with no traffic buzzing by participants.  With this comes with a price and as all participants must maintain a 13 minute per mile pace.  This pace goes into effect as soon as the last participant crosses the start line which takes about 20 minutes.  For any Charity Participant that can’t maintain the 13 minute pace they will be forced to the lakefront path in five different locations along Lake Shore Drive if they can’t meet cutoff time limits.  Please see the map for these locations and times.  The path will be completely supported with aid stations including water/Gatorade, restrooms, mile markers medical personal and course marshals directing the participants.  The finish line will remain open for those on the path until 11:30am.  We hope you will be able to train your participants to a 13 minute pace but for those who just can’t do it they have an option.  Please make sure all your participants are fully aware of the pace and the rules.

trishalogo1
The Trisha Apte Memorial Fund is a scholarship fund that was set up in memory of Trisha Apte, a beautiful young woman whose remarkable compassion and kindness left an unmistakable imprint on those who knew her. Inspired by Trisha’s passion for helping those around her, family and friends have set-up a scholarship in her memory.  To learn about the remarkable woman Trisha was, please visit www.trishaapte.com. To donate money to the fund please visit Team Trisha Fundraising.

Trisha was passionate about her belief in the impact of community service, even writing the following, “The efforts put forth facilitate a generation of opportunities for young people to change their communities for the better and to build essential skills for the future through civic engagement.  I want to work with young women as I truly believe that they have a unique ability to create lasting and sustainable change in their communities.”

The summer after Trisha graduated from Northwestern, she used her signing bonus (from her full time job) to cover her living expenses while she volunteered with a non-profit group in Washington D.C. Trisha’s experience interning for this non-profit helped shape her career perspective, as she realized she could use her business skills towards the mission of improving education, healthcare, and the quality of life for people around the world.

In this spirit, the Trisha Apte Memorial Fund has been set up to provide the opportunity for others to pursue a similarly meaningful summer volunteer experience. At present, the Trisha Apte Memorial Fund provides a living stipend to Northwestern University students that spend their summer doing unpaid community service but as the scholarship fund grows, it will also provide partial scholarships to Northwestern University students that show an exemplary commitment to community service.

Jack’s Team members commit to fundraise a minimum of $325, and with that you receive free race entry, free fundraising assistance and a Jack’s Team tech shirt.

The incidence of melanoma is increasing at an alarming rate, and is a threat to both adults and children; yet research toward better treatment and a cure remains underfunded. Additionally, awareness of the prevention and detection of melanoma and all forms of skin cancer must be raised in order to prevent further spread of the disease.

The Jack H. Marston II Melanoma Fund (Jack’s Fund) was established in July 2004 when melanoma took the life of Jack H. Marston, II at the age of 47.  Jack was an accomplished athlete and a four-time Chicago Marathon participant.  Jack’s Fund is committed to reflecting his values of determination, tenacity, compassion, and the competitive spirit.

The fundamental belief of Home of Hope, Inc., a non-profit organization established in 1999, is that each child is precious, and given an opportunity to succeed, each has the potential of becoming a self-sustaining, productive member of society.

HOH has worked with 17 established service providers in India – 12 are still active - and one in Berkeley, CA. Together, with people who help HOH raise money, we have provided a brighter future to 50,000 under- privileged children. Through no fault of their own, these children are crippled, orphaned, abandoned or physically/mentally challenged. Some are blind, deaf or mute. Others are Tsunami victims, street children or victims of AIDS or other sexually transmitted diseases. Each of them deserves an opportunity to become independent and enjoy life, and that is our purpose!

 PMP

The Puppy Mill Project raises awareness and educates the public about puppy mills and their direct connection to pet stores, internet sites and newspaper ads that sell dogs. Some of the ways we raise awareness is thru educational community booths, school presentations, and advertising. We support anti puppy mill legislation and helped to pass HB 5772, The Pet Store Disclosure Bill in Illinois.  Puppy mills are commercial dog breeding facilities that produce puppies in inhumane and cruel conditions for profit. Puppy mills are legal in this country and educating the public is the most effective way to put an end to them. Please join our team to help end this cruel industry. Visit www.thepuppymillproject.org for more information. Team members will receive a Puppy Mill Project t-shirt and are invited to join the after race celebration.

Our programs redefine city neighborhoods and strengthen teamwork, diligence and creativity in our participants. Our goal is to support students who despite growing up in the United States and earning their high school diplomas continuously have road blocks placed before them when pursuing a post-secondary education. The biggest obstacle is financial need due to their inability to qualify for federal and state financial aid.

Since the fall of 2009, The DREAM Gala Committee has raised funds in attempt to award scholarships to UIC students who are dedicated to furthering their education. Most recently, The Dream Gala Committee has decided to begin focusing our
fundraising efforts not only to support UIC students, but also students’ throughout the city of Chicago, who are in dire need of financial assistance to further their education.

The programme called – Nanhi Kali meaning "a small bud", since its inception in 1996, has steadily provided support to a growing number of Kalis. Support has been multitudinal including material support like uniforms, socks & shoes, school bags and stationery right upto more concerted academic assistance through study support classes. The project was implemented through 23 grassroot Ngo’s across India with whom the parent company decided to partner/network.

Nanhi Kali today has grown as a girl child education movement by allowing thousands of individuals and corporates to partner and participate by sponsoring the girl child’s education.

Currently, Project Nanhi Kali supports over 57,000 girls. The goal is to educate 100000 by 2012. This is consistent with the ideology that India's growth in the long run can be positively impacted by educating girls and women.

My Team Triumph is an organization whose primary purpose is to provide an opportunity for individuals with disabilities that normally would not be able to participate in a road race or triathlon to be able to experience the thrill of competition and excitement of crossing a finish line. We have chapters in OH, WI, CA, AZ, FL, CO and now IL through our Chi-Town Chapter. Our volunteer athletes act as the arms and legs, but our "Captains" are the true inspiration of our teams. We are looking for compassionate and motivated volunteers who want to be a part of our My Team Triumph Chi-Town Chapter and to experience this joy firsthand with our Captains. Prepare to be inspired!
